The Treatment, Prevention and Protection against Hyperpigmentation
Sun spots, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation are some of the main conditions that contribute to skin ageing. With our modern lifestyles, we are often exposed to many external factors that damage the skin cells.
What causes Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is formed by increased levels of melanin, the pigment found in the skin that gives uneven skin tone and dark spots their colour. There are many causes of pigmentation including excessive sun exposure, artificial lighting, hair removal such as depilatory creams or shaving, hormonal changes and pregnancy.
The depth of the pigmentation can vary, with the excess melanin being formed in either the epidermal or dermal layer of the skin. When the pigmentation is in the epidermal layer, it is much easier to treat as it is close to the surface. However dermal pigmentation has the melanin in the deeper layers of the skin and requires more intensive treatments.
Sun exposure, one of the most common causes of pigmentation, triggers the overactive production of melanin. The problem occurs when free radical damage oxidises the cells. These oxidised cells being unstable, now multiply by taking the electrons of healthy cells, creating a chain reaction of skin damage.
To actively treat the skin and minimise the appearance of pigmentation, concentrated professional products are required to deliver active ingredients specially formulated to improve skin health and appearance.
MOISTURISERS – For the Daily Treatment of Pigmentation
Moisturisers are important for taking care of the surface of the skin, providing hydration, elasticity and suppleness. To improve the appearance of pigmentation, it is important to maintain a healthy skin condition. These moisturisers not only repair oxidative damage but also protect the skin and improve the appearance of pigmentation.
A rich moisturising cream containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic, Citric, Malic and Tartaric) from plant based sources for actively inducing an even peeling effect to promote an even skin tone. Vitamin E provides nourishment, while improving moisture levels. It is rich in antioxidants which repair and protect the skin cells.
Suitable for: Normal to dry skin showing signs of premature ageing and pigmentation.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse, tone, apply eye cream and serum. Follow with the application of Beauty Repair Complex. To be used day and night. For best results apply sun protection every day.
Gel Cream with Ceramides
Light textured gel-cream formulated with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic, Citric, Malic and Tartaric) from plant based sources for promotion cell turnover and ceramides, a moisture holding lipid that is a naturally occurring component in the intercellular spaces in the stratum corneum. This outermost layer of the skin is vulnerable to water loss and replenishing the skin’s ceramide levels decreases transepidermal water loss, significantly improving dehydration.
Suitable for: Dehydrated skin with an impaired barrier and signs of premature ageing.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse, tone, apply eye cream and serum. Follow with the application of Gel Cream with Ceramides. To be used day and night. For best results apply sun protection every day.
Silk Line Day Cream with SPF 15
The Silk Line Day cream is a rich moisturiser which provides sun protection and helps to minimise the appearance of spots and fine wrinkles by using amino acids and peptides from silk cocoon protein which renew, soften and firm the skin, along with Vegetable DNA, a purified extract from wheat germ with powerful antioxidant properties that promotes the healing of micro damage and regenerates skin. It is capable of holding 10,000 times its weight in water which provides the skin with deep hydration. Yeast Extract cells produced by Exel boost “oxygen uptake”, boost the amount of oxygen used by the body. It stimulates collagen production and also prevents pigmentation by blocking melanin synthesis. Also contains Alpha Bisabolol (an antioxidant extract of German Chamomile with anti-inflammatory properties for reducing dryness and irritation), Vitamin E (a deeply moisturising antioxidant for skin repair), Hyaluronic Acid (a powerful moisturising gel-like water holding molecule naturally found in the skin) and Beta Carotene (an orange pigment found in fruits and vegetables which reduces the effects of sun damage and is a rich source of vitamin A).
Suitable for: Premature ageing skin, pigmentation and is excellent for sensitive skin.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse, tone, apply eye cream and serum. Follow with the application of Silk Line Day Cream, at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure.
PEELING AND SKIN LIGHTENERS – Active Treatments for Evening the Skin Tone
Improving the appearance of existing hyperpigmentation requires active treatments to induce desquamation (the shedding of dead skin cells) to improve cellular turnover. This brings the pigmented cells to the surface to be shed, while promoting the production of new healthy cells.
Another important action of active pigmentation treatments is the ability to inhibit the excess production of melanin.
The Clarifying Fluid Gel is a concentrated skin lightener for the treatment and prevention of dark spots and pigmentation. It is formulated with Emblica Extract, also known as Indian Gooseberry an antioxidant rich plant which inhibits melanin synthesis. It is rich in polyphenols, abundant micronutrients that improve skin health. Mandelic Acid, derived from bitter almonds is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid that promotes the shedding of dead skin cells while lightening pigmentation and evening the skin tone. Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant for the protection of photosensitive skin also repairs free radical damage to the cells while preventing pigmentation.
Suitable for: Dark spots, Hyper-pigmentation and age spots.
Renewal Active Cream is designed to induce a gentle, safe and even micro-exfoliation by loosening the ‘glue’ that binds the dead skin cells together. The normal and dry skin formula also is gentle enough for sensitive conditions and provides deep moisture while improving skin elasticity. Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acid micro sponges gradually release a controlled concentration of the active ingredients: glycolic, lactic, mandelic, citric and salicylic acids to minimise uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Lipoic Acid, a water and fat soluble antioxidant which is naturally occurring in the body has the ability to protect and repair cell membranes as well as the inside of the cells. Lipoic acid has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants present in the skin such as vitamins C and E, effectively boosting repair.
Suitable for: Normal, dry, pigmented skin and signs of premature ageing.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse the skin and spray appropriate toning lotion for the skin type. Apply Renewal Active Cream into the face, neck and décolletage until completely absorbed. Night-time use recommended.
Renewing Gel Cream is formulated for the peeling of oily and combination skin. The light gel texture is easily absorbed and vanishes into the skin, while providing moisture and improving elasticity. It can be used safely on acne skin conditions to induce a gentle, safe and even micro-exfoliation. Exel Skin Renewing Gel is designed to loosen the ‘glue’ that binds the dead skin cells together, to promote desquamation and boost the renewal process.
Suitable for: Oily, acne, pigmented skin and signs of premature ageing.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse the skin and spray appropriate toning lotion for the skin type. Apply Renewing Gel Cream into the face, neck and décolletage until completely absorbed. Night-time use recommended.
ANTIOXIDANT SERUMS – Optimising Cellular Defence and Repair
To prevent and treat existing hyperpigmentation we need to strengthen the skin’s defence against free radical damage from UV radiation. Antioxidants play a major role in cellular repair and stopping the chain reaction of oxidative damage in its tracks.
When choosing skincare products for optimising the defence against the oxidisation of the cells, ingredients with antioxidant properties must be included as a major part of the routine. These antioxidant ingredients also inhibit the production of melanin, preventing the formation of uneven pigmentation. Skin repair takes place when we are at rest. This is why it is important to use concentrated serums as part of the night time routine to enhance the reparative ability as we sleep.
Beauty Repairing Gel with Vitamin C
This antioxidant repairing serum is for improving epidermal luminosity and smoothness. Liposomes carry stabilised Vitamin C to the deepest layers of the skin to combat free radical damage and improve photosensitivity. It prevents the formation of pigmentation by inhibiting melanin synthesis. Vitamin E and Aloe Vera provide rich moisture and hydration to protect the skin cells. The formula also prevents water loss, accelerates cellular renewal and the healing process with urea. Skin irritation is also controlled with Panthenol, which converts to Pantothenic Acid when applied to the skin to infuse hydration and stimulate healing function.
Suitable for: All skin types, photosensitivity, dehydrated, sensitive and mature.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse the skin and spray appropriate toning lotion for the skin type. Press Beauty Repairing Gel into the face, neck and décolletage until completely absorbed then follow with a moisturising cream. Night time use recommended.
The revolutionary serum which fights against the processes generated by free radicals on the skin surface (oxidisation, pollution, under-nourishment) supplying deep hydration, restoring luminosity and healthy elasticity. Stimulates the skin’s natural capacity for renewal and accelerates the creation of new cells. Vegetable DNA is a potent antioxidant capable of holding 10,000 times its weight in water, promotes cellular restructuring and boosts collagen synthesis. Vitamin C protects photosensitive skin and prevents pigmentation, while hyaluronic acid, a gel-like water holding molecule improves skin hydration and is a powerful moisturiser. The Vegetable DNA biogel also contains Allantoin, an emollient that treats dryness, roughness and flaking while protecting the skin from irritants.
Suitable for: All skin types, dehydrated, dry and skin exposed to external aggressors including Ultraviolet radiation, pollution and seasonal changes.
Directions: Thoroughly cleanse the skin and spray appropriate toning lotion for the skin type. Press Vegetable DNA Biogel into the face, neck and décolletage until completely absorbed then follow with a moisturising cream. Daytime and nighttime use.
SUN PROTECTION – Blocking UV Radiation
Uneven pigmentation, dark spots, premature ageing and sunburn are all skin conditions brought upon by the negative effects of free radical damage from sun exposure. Ultra Violet radiation, which consists of UVA (long-wave) and UVB (short-wave) rays, penetrates the atmosphere and can onset damage to skin health.
These free radicals, in order to become stable steal electrons from healthy cells, spreading oxidative damage in a chain reaction resulting in photoaging.
UVA radiation is the main variation of light that causes pigmentation by stimulating melanin production. It penetrates to the basal layer of the skin where it causes damage to the keratinocytes, contributing to initiating the development of skin cancers.
UVB rays penetrate the more superficial epidermal layers of the skin to cause sunburn, redness and playing a role in the development of skin cancers.
To protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun Exel skincare has developed a range of Sun Protection Crèmes containing the most powerful ingredients to prevent damage from UVA and UVB radiation, while improving the skin condition. Sun Protection is an important step in everyday skincare. However it is especially important while undergoing programs treating uneven pigmentation and any skin rejuvenation treatments.
Additional advice: Limit sun exposure, especially between 10 am to 2 pm. When possible wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, hats and sunglasses.

Skin Peels have been in popularity for many years and one of the most talked about ingredients to induce peeling are Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, also known as AHA’s and BHA’s, but
what are they and what do they do for our skin?
Alpha Hydroxy Acids are a class of acids derived from fruits, milk and nuts (Lactic, Glycolic, Mandelic and Citric Acids).
It works by penetrating the skin and loosening the ‘glue’ that binds dead cells together, effectively detaching dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This results in a deep exfoliation which leads to softer, smoother skin and a brighter complexion. Alongside the improvement in skin texture, peeling renews and rejuvenates the skin by bringing fresh, young cells to the surface and improves cellular turnover, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while diminishing the appearance of pigmentation and skin discolouration. AHA’s because of it’s renewing properties is also suitable for the improvement of acne and refining the skin surface from acne scarring.
Beta Hydroxy Acid, including Salicylic Acid the plant based acid derived from salicin of the willow tree, adds keratolytic activity which promotes the peeling and shedding of cells in the stratum corneum layer. It also decongests the skin by softening the sebum which blocks the pores. For this reason, it is effective for improving desquamation and especially effective for acne and oily skin types as well.
So who needs AHA’s and BHA’s in their skin care?
Many skin types and conditions can benefit from the use of AHA’s and BHA’s in skincare. As the aging process slows cellular metabolism, dead skin cells are not shed as rapidly and effectively by the body. Peeling therefore is able to aid the skin in improving this process, allowing healthy cells to the surface for younger looking skin. This benefits conditions including lines, wrinkles, dryness, flaking, hyperpigmentation and even rosacea.
Acne skin conditions can also benefit from AHA’s and BHA’s as the microexfoliation effect keeps skin clear, prevents the post-inflammatory pigmentation and scarring caused by acne. BHA’s having a decongestive effect on blocked pores means fewer and less hardened blackheads and whiteheads.
Which Products should I be using?
While there are many variations of AHA and BHA based products on the market, it is important to select products that are not only concentrated with high quality ingredients to be effective in improving the condition of the skin, but also formulated in a way that would safely induce skin renewal without causing irritation.
Exel Renewal Creams
Exel Skincare has two variations of active peeling creams. For normal to dry skin, including rosacea conditions, Exel Skin Renewal Active Cream treats the skin while retaining skin moisture with antioxidant vitamin E. For oily skin, Exel Renewing Gel Cream has a lightweight formula specially formulated for oil skin types.
Exel Renewal Creams contains alpha and beta hydroxy acid microsponges, which gradually release a controlled concentration of the active peeling ingredients. This prevents irritation and keeps the skin at a balanced pH level. AHA’s glycolic, lactic, mandelic and citric acids are proven to have a lightening effect on pigmentation and promotes an even skin tone, while BHA Salicylic Acid adds keratolytic activity, which promotes the peeling and shedding of cells in the stratum corneum layer.
Powerful antioxidant Vitamin E helps to prevent visible signs of ageing with its anti free radical properties. It protects and repairs, while improving moisture levels, leaving the skin smooth and luminous. Lipoic Acid is a strong antioxidant naturally occurring in every cell in the body, which has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E. Due to being water and fat soluble, it has the ability to protect not only the cell membranes, but the inside of the cells as well. It has powerful anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory effects which actively work to reduce puffiness, swelling, redness and blotchiness. It helps to minimise skin roughness and also decreases the appearance of photoaging. This results in a healthy radiant glowing complexion, with an even skin tone and minimised pore size.
Directions: Apply onto thoroughly cleansed skin with a pressing motion until completely absorbed. For best results apply in the evening.

Cooling wraps are a salon only, results driven beauty treatment for body contouring using the Exel Cryogenic Therapy Line. It improves the appearance of cellulite, stretchmarks and spider veins while visibly tightening the skin, breaking down stubborn fatty deposits and eliminating fluid retention.
The easy 15 minute treatment is not only quick and simple to apply, convenient for your clients but also delivers real visible results. Cooling wraps are formulated using a blend or natural herbal ingredients to stimulate collagen synthesis for skin firming while forcing the body to use stored fat as energy with its unique cooling action.
During the treatment the Exel Cryogenic Lotion and Gel is applied to either the abdomen, legs, arms or a combination or 2 areas (maximum) and then covered tightly with plastic film. The film is to hold the treatment gel in place and allow the skin to absorb the ingredients over a period of 1 to 6 hours. The wrap can be safely left overnight for over 6 hours, however the cooling sensation may be minimised.
Leaving the Cooling Wrap on for 6 hours, allows the client to take full advantage of the wrap’s properties.
How do wraps work?
The highly concentrated active ingredients of the Cryogenic Lotion and Gel, once applied, rapidly cool the skin to create an environment to induce the body to react by warming itself to regulate the body temperature. This forces stored fat to be metabolised as energy. The treatment also highly stimulates the production of collagen to minimise stretch marks, loss of firmness and sagging skin.
While wearing the wrap the skin’s channels absorb the active ingredients, improving blood circulation, lymphatic circulation, while minimising water retention and swelling.
What are the active ingredients?
Centella Asiatica Extract: A powerful herb used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Centella Asiatica being rich in antioxidants targets free radicals in the skin and encourages the growth of fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen synthesis. The collagen boosting and anti-inflammatory properties effectively diminish the appearance of stretch marks, tighten and firm the skin and increases elasticity. Centella Asiatica also improves the appearance of cellulite and loose skin, which increases elasticity for a firmer, smoother body while minimising the dimply and lumpy appearance on thighs, buttocks and upper arms. Lymphatic and blood circulation is also stimulated, repairing damage to veins allowing improvement to spider veins and relief for tired legs and feet.
Menthol: Menthol has a natural analgesic attribute and when applied topically it relieves pain, muscle tension and itchiness. It increases blood flow and dilates blood vessels allowing the actives to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Camphor: It is found in the wood of the camphor laurel tree. Applied topically it relieves muscular pain and itches. It increases local blood flow and acts as a counterirritant, which reduces pain and swelling causing irritation.
Citric Acid: This acid induces cellular turnover, improves skin texture and the release of toxins. Citric Acid is particularly useful for treating cellulite.
Exel Cryogenic Therapy Line can be alone or combined with other professional body contouring treatments for the visible improvement of cellulite, sagging skin, stretch marks, fatty deposits and fluid retention, while increasing skin elasticity, tone and hydration.
