The Treatment, Prevention and Protection against Hyperpigmentation
Sun spots, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation are some of the main conditions that contribute to skin ageing. With our modern lifestyles, we are often exposed to many external factors that damage the skin cells.
What causes Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is formed by increased levels of melanin, the pigment found in the skin that gives uneven skin tone and dark spots their colour. There are many causes of pigmentation including excessive sun exposure, artificial lighting, hair removal such as depilatory creams or shaving, hormonal changes and pregnancy.
The depth of the pigmentation can vary, with the excess melanin being formed in either the epidermal or dermal layer of the skin. When the pigmentation is in the epidermal layer, it is much easier to treat as it is close to the surface. However dermal pigmentation has the melanin in the deeper layers of the skin and requires more intensive treatments.
Sun exposure, one of the most common causes of pigmentation, triggers the overactive production of melanin. The problem occurs when free radical damage oxidises the cells. These oxidised cells being unstable, now multiply by taking the electrons of healthy cells, creating a chain reaction of skin damage.
